I have a cat sickness question… please read?
Upper respiratory viruses are very common at cat shelters (I’ve worked or volunteered at cat shelters for 13 years). Unvaccinated cats are more susceptible, but even vaccinated cats can succomb to one of these viruses due to stress. It is probably feline herpes virus (rhinotracheitis). Humans cannot catch feline upper respiratory viruses. The virus could last a week or more. If the congestion becomes worse, take her to the vet for an oral antibiotic along with the eye medicine. Make sure that she is eating. When cats are congested and can’t smell (as well as feeling bad) they often won’t eat. Offer her smelly canned food, which will also provide moisture to keep her hydrated. You can warm the food slightly if necessary to increase the aroma and make it more palatable.
What a touching story! I am so happy that you made the effort to help this poor, abandoned cat! Please email me if you have questions. Good luck and I hope to hear an update!
